The Numerology of Destiny: How to Calculate Your Birth Card Pair

Developed by Mary K. Greer, the Tarot Birth Card system bridges Pythagorean numerology with Major Arcana archetypes. By summing the four two-digit numbers of your birth date (MM + DD + 19 + YY or 20 + YY), the resulting number reduces to a base sum between 1 and 21. This number identifies your primary Life Path Card, while its numerological base or partner card defines your Soul Card.

For example, if an individual’s sum equals 14, their primary card is Temperance (XIV), and reducing 1 + 4 yields 5, making The Hierophant (V) their partner card. This Hierophant/Temperance pair signifies a soul destiny centered on harmonizing institutional tradition with spiritual alchemy and personal balance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can my birth tarot card change over time?

No. Your Birth Cards remain constant throughout your physical life. However, your *Year Card* changes every birthday, calculated by adding your birth day and month to the current calendar year.

What does it mean if my birth card is Death?

Paired with The Emperor (13/4), your life path centers on building enduring structures while gracefully releasing what no longer serves. It signifies a profound capacity for reinvention.

Why do some people have three birth cards instead of two?

Birth numbers that sum to 19, 20, or 21 reduce into three-card sets (e.g. 19 reduces to 10 and 1, linking The Sun, Wheel of Fortune, and The Magician).
