Six Centuries of Evolution: From Trionfi to Occult Symbolism

Academic history confirms that tarot originated around the 1420s in northern Italy as a trick-taking card game known as *Tarocchi* or *Carte da Trionfi* (Cards of the Triumphs). Painted by court artists for wealthy dynasties such as the Visconti and Sforza families, these lavish hand-illuminated cards incorporated classical Renaissance allegories, Christian virtues, and Petrarchan triumphal poetry rather than magical symbols.

The esoteric transformation of tarot occurred in late 18th-century France through scholars Antoine Court de Gébelin and Jean-Baptiste Alliette (Etteilla), who mistakenly attributed tarot to ancient Egyptian mysteries. This occult revival culminated in 1909 in London, where occultist Arthur Edward Waite and artist Pamela Colman Smith created the Rider-Waite-Smith deck, completely revolutionizing tarot by illustrating every Minor Arcana card with narrative symbolic scenes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Did tarot cards really originate in ancient Egypt?

No. Historical and papyrological evidence confirms this was an 18th-century romantic myth popularized by French occultist Antoine Court de Gébelin. Tarot originated in Renaissance Italy.

Why did tarot transition from a game to divination?

The Renaissance allegorical figures (such as Death, the Wheel of Fortune, and Judgment) naturally invited philosophical introspection. By the late 1700s, French occultists recognized their potency for mapping human fate.

Who was Pamela Colman Smith?

Pamela Colman Smith was the visionary British-American artist who illustrated the 1909 Rider-Waite-Smith deck. Her groundbreaking decision to illustrate all 56 Minor Arcana cards with human narratives made modern tarot intuitive.
